Pool filter hose and vacuum hose: sizes, lengths and how to connect them
Most above-ground pool problems that get blamed on the pump — weak suction, air in the pump basket, a cleaner that will not move — are hose problems. Here is how to size, measure and connect pool hose so the system runs the way it was designed to.
1-1/4″ or 1-1/2″?
Above-ground pools use two hose sizes. Smaller and older pools, and many economy pump-and-filter sets, use 1-1/4″ I.D. hose; larger pools and most current sand and cartridge systems use 1-1/2″ I.D. The size is set by the fittings on the skimmer, pump and filter, so measure the outside of the fitting the hose slides onto (about 1-3/8″ for 1-1/4″ hose, about 1-5/8″ for 1-1/2″ hose) or check the pump manual. If the two ends differ, use the universal pool hose adapter rather than forcing the hose.
Connection hose: how many and how long
A typical above-ground system has three runs: skimmer to pump, pump to filter, and filter back to the return. Measure each run along the path the hose will take, add about a foot for gentle curves, and avoid tight bends near the fittings. Superflex filter connection hoses come in standard 3- and 6-foot lengths and longer cuts, with cuffed ends ready for clamps.
Clamps and leaks
Use stainless-steel worm-drive clamps sized to the hose outside diameter, one at each cuff, tightened over the fitting’s barb. Air bubbles in the pump basket almost always mean a suction-side leak at a clamp or a cracked hose end; water on the ground means a return-side leak. Replace hose that has gone stiff or chalky — UV and chlorine age PVC — before it splits mid-season.
Vacuum hose
Pool vacuum hose connects a manual vacuum head or a suction-side automatic cleaner to the skimmer or dedicated vacuum port. Length should reach the farthest corner of the pool from the skimmer with a few feet of slack; measure the pool’s longest dimension and add 6 to 8 feet. Superflex vacuum hose floats, swivels at the cuff so the cleaner can turn without twisting, and is spiral-reinforced so it will not collapse under suction. Match the cuff size to the skimmer or cleaner (1-1/2″ is the most common).
Winter and storage
Drain and store hose out of the sun in the off-season. Coil it loosely; a tight coil in the cold can kink the wall permanently. Spiral-reinforced hose tolerates this far better than plain vinyl, which is one reason to buy it.
